Me in the corner.

Well, here I am at home again after a long grueling day at work. Next week is our big check-in and the beginning of our summer programs, so things are fairly hectic at this time. Hooray. Honestly, it's a little annoying. I'm not lazy (well, maybe just a tad), and I know that most jobs have some sort of "crunch time" wherein everybody is stressed out and all pissed off...but I just don't like it. I know some of you are tired of hearing me say it, but there was no "crunch time" at the Shoah Foundation. Ah, those were the days.

So, suffice it to say that the next couple weeks will be quite hectic. At least I will be staying close to UCLA during that time, because I will be housesitting for Kevin and Laurel Jones, with whom I used to work at the Foundation. They have these two annoying cats that they need me to take care of, and they are paying me 300 dollars to do it. 300 dollars to do little more than sleep and feed cats. Hooray. The last time I housesat for them, I was unemployed, so I just spent most of the time watching Magnum, P.I. That show kicks some serious ass.

Well, it probably won't surprise you, but I am doing none too well on my summer reading list mentioned in a previous post. I still have yet to finish A Clockwork Orange, although I am on the last section. It really is quite a good book, though.

So...I did call my dad the other night, and the conversation went surprisingly better than I thought. I think he was just excited to hear from me, since my brother didn't even bother to call. So, the call was largely successful, I think.

I've started doing some exploration of what I should do next with my life. I'm sort of leaning further toward pursuing a teaching credential, but I'm still not sure. I know it sounds cheesy, but one of the things that I dislike about my current job is that I don't feel like I am making any real difference in anybody's life. I mean...wow, I put some student from Nepal up in the dorms for four weeks...big deal. Yay...look at me...I'm doing so much. I guess that's one reason why teaching seems appealing. Another reason is that it would give me more opportunities to travel- if I stay at the ALC for a few years, I can pretty much kiss any travelling I might do goodbye.

Well, try as I might, I simply have not been able to catch World Cup fever. It might have something to do with the fact that the games are on at like 4 in the freaking morning. The funny thing is that the United States team is doing so well. I mean, if they won, would we even care?

It reminds me of when I was in New Zealand, working at summer camps, back in January of 1999. All these other counselors (Kiwis, of course) were bragging to us Americans about how they had defeated us in the America's Cup, and they expected that we would care. Our reaction, however, was more along the lines of, "You beat us in the what? What is that?" And they just didn't get it that Americans are not entertained by watching Dennis Connor sail his pansy-ass boat through Mission Bay in San Diego. It's not really all that exciting. It's right up there with watching your toenails grow.

Well....I think I've rambled enough for one evening. I've got to be going to bed soon. I think I'll try to read some of A Clockwork Orange before I sleep. That should be fun.
