I'm a Lame Duck.
That's me. Mr. Lame Duck Housing Coordinator.
I sit here at my desk at
work, staring out the window at the
UCLA campus and deal with little problems as they arise, but not getting involved with any long term projects. Nothing I do here will matter after next Friday. I mean, I guess it will matter to others, so I need to keep that in mind- that I'm not operating in a vaccuum and that there will be other people affected by the things I do here. But still, it's sort of hard for me to give a damn.
Sometimes I feel like even shirking the short term stuff, but, as I said, that would be deleterious to any recommendations that I would be hoping to receive from them.
I wonder if Lame Duck Presidents feel this way. Like, did
Bill Clinton just sit there staring out the window of the Oval Office, occasionally answering the phone and responding to an occasional e-mail? And if there was some encroachment by Iraq across the border of Kuwait, or in the no-fly zone, I wonder if Clinton just sort of glanced at the calendar and mumbled, "Let
Bush deal with it...."
Another sign that my life is somewhat boring at times is the fact that I am really looking forward to beginning of the fall television season. Unlike
some friends of mine who don't even own televisions, I absolutely love watching. This summer has been a virtual wasteland of entertainment with such crap as
American Idol and
Dog Eat Dog. I hate reality television. I've never been able to get into it. I've seen only one episode of Survivor ever, and that was enough for me.
The show I can't wait for, which premieres belatedly on October 29, is
24. I was hooked on that show after just one episode last year. I'm curious to see if the gimmick works for another season. But you'd better believe I'll be there watching it.
Just to prove that there is at least some excitement in my life, I'm going to
Magic Mountain tomorrow. The last time I was there was on Memorial Day in 1999, when I went with
Shane and Erika and Robyn McElliot, the girl I was "dating" at the time. So, I've not been there since they built all those rides that have been giving people brain aneurisms. Let the fun begin.
