Mostly Harmless

I have emerged unscathed from my terrible ordeal. While it was decidedly awkward at times, and while I was forced to answer questions phrased as bluntly as, "What is cum?" and endure exchanges such as this...

Student: Is the anus part of the reproductive system?
Me: No, it's actually part of the digest-
Another Student: Yes it is! You can have sex there!
Me: *Blush*

...for the most part, it was pretty painless. It got easier as it went along- first period was somewhat difficult for me but, by the time I got to sixth period, it was almost second nature.

This week, things are wrapping up. My classes are taking an exam today and tomorrow, and then Life Science is pretty much over for the year. School is out on the 17th, and the last week is filled with all sorts of activities, none of which leave room for actual curriculum. One always has to wonder what exactly is the point of the last week of school. But, we have to be there, and so do the kids.

Summer school starts a scant five days later, and lasts until sometime around July 28. I'm not sure exactly when it ends, but I know that I will have the majority of the month of August off. Teachers have to report back to work on August 30.

Which, of course, brings me to my next point... I have been offered, and plan on accepting, a permanent position at the middle school for next year. Thankfully, I will no longer be teaching science but rather seventh grade math- which is a subject for which I actually hold a valid credential. While, ideally, I would prefer to be teaching high school history, those positions are extremely hard to come by, so I am relying on my math credential to get my foot in the door.

So, today, I went to the bookstore and picked up a copy of Nick Hornby's latest book, A Long Way Down. I am currently strongly resisting the urge to start reading it, largely because I don't like reading more than one book at a time and am presently working my way through Glen Gold's Carter Beats the Devil, which is taking me quite a while.

Last weekend, I had what was probably one of my most eventful weekends in months (which is pretty sad, in fact.) On Saturday night, I went out to dinner at a Brazilian restaurant in Old Town Pasadena with my friend Angelica, whom I have not seen since sometime in January. Then, on Sunday evening, I met up with a friend of mine, Kevin Maynard, who was visiting from Florida. After going to church, I joined Kevin and a friend of his at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, for some good old fashioned southern cooking. There really is no dinner to compare to waffles and chicken drenched with gravy, thick and greasy enough to give even the healthiest person an instant heart attack. But, as anybody who has ever eaten there will tell you, it is DAMN good.

Well, that's really all for now. It's about 10:00, so I really should be getting to bed soon.
